Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said with the introduction of ordination of a large group of Thai Buddhists as Buddhist monks on Vesak Full Moon day next week, adding that the religious ties that existed for centuries will reach a new high. He said this when Thai Ambassador Paitoon Mahapannaporn called on him at the Temple Trees in Colombo on May 17.
The Prime Minister extended his good wishes to Thai Prime Minister and the newly appointed Foreign Minister at this meeting. He reiterated the long-standing and cordial ties between the two countries, which were bounded by Buddhist affinity.
The Ambassador said the new Free Trade Agreement would give a boost to economic ties between the two countries. He said a high level investment team from Thailand had visited Sri Lanka last week to explore possibility of new joint ventures in the fisheries sector and next week another Thai team will come to discuss the potential for renewable energy projects. They will also visit Deduru Oya and Yan Ela reservoir to examine possibility of installing floating solar panels for generating electricity.
Parliamentarian Yadamini Gunawardena, Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Disanayake and Counsellor at Thai Embassy Prangtip Kongridhisuksakorn were also present at this discussion.
