Prime Minister and MPs donate equipment to School for the Deaf and Blind

A consignment of equipment was donated to the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Parliamentarians Gamini Gunawardena and Yadamini Gunawardena recently. The educational aids and other equipment were donated from the decentralised budgets of the Prime Minister and MP Gunawardena.
At the same time, a Braille Teacher Training Programme conducted by the National Language Education Institute of the Ministry of Public Administration Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government was also inaugurated by the Prime Minister.
The Institute, which was set up by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena when he was the Minister of Education, has trained a large number of Braille and sign-language teachers to cater to the 1.7 million disabled children in the country.
By producing Braille and sign-language teachers, the Institute has catered to the need for such teachers in the country and also bring foreign exchange to the country as job opportunities for specialized teachers are available in many foreign countries.
Principal of the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, Rosanna Kulendran, Dehiwala Mayor Stanley Silva, former Provincial Councillor Amal Silva and Chairman of the National Language Education Institute Jayampathi Bandara Heenkenda also took part in the ceremony.
