Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena inspected a twenty-acre paddy field in Dankotuwa Atiyawala where the local rice variety of Maa Wee is harvested using organic fertilizers.
Mr. W.S. Y. Dharmasena the owner of the paddy field exchanged his views with the Prime Minister and the cultivated “Hangimutthan” variety of Maa Wee was brought to the attention of him. The farmer also pointed out that this type of paddy is propagated by offshoots from time to time, so it is possible to harvest several times from a single cultivation. The specialty of this variety is a yield of 70% can be obtained from in one season.
Mr. Priyantha Peramuna, the seed bank treasurer of the North Kehelella, Tarakamadillayaya Local Agricultural Resources Federation of Badalgama Agricultural Service Area, said that he has more than ten varieties of Maa Wee with him. The Prime Minister said that the government always has faith in the farmers as well as the rural people.
