International Red Cross seeks donor support for humanitarian work in Sri Lanka

Asia Pacific Regional Director of International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) Alexander Matheou said his organization is seeking the support of affluent donors for enhancing humanitarian assistance programmes in Sri Lanka.

He has stated this when he called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Prime Minister’s Office in Colombo yesterday (13). During the discussion, the Prime Minister asked the IFRC to provide additional assistance in the form of medicine as well as for the programmes for food distribution to most affected people due to the current economic crisis.

Director Matheou assured that his organization would look into the possibilities of enhancing humanitarian assistance programmes in Sri Lanka.
Prime Minister Gunawardena thanked the Red Cross for the assistance provided during natural disasters such as tsunami, floods and droughts as well as during economic difficulties.

President of Sri Lanka Red Cross Society Jagath Abeysinghe, Deputy Director General Aruna Lekamge and Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake were also present on this occasion.
