Horana Rajamaha Viharaya Navam Maha Perahera Commences with the Participation of the Prime Minister

The 2026 Navam Maha Perahera of the historic Horana Rajamaha Viharaya, located in the ancient aigam Koralaya, commenced on 14th of February with the participation of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Marking a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s Buddhist history, the grand procession featuring the Sacred Relics of the Loard Buddha and the statue of the God Upulvan Sri Vishnu was organized once again this year. Following the placement of the casket and the floral tributes by Prime Minister, the Perahera proceeded on its street procession.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister stated that this sacred site, blessed by a Bo sapling brought by Sanghamitta Theri, is a highly venerated place that was renovated during the reign of King Parakramabahu II by the Minister of Devapratiraja. She further noted that the temple, which had once fallen into neglect, was restored through the unwavering dedication of successive chief incumbents, including Palkumbure Aththadassi Nayaka Thera. Today, the temple has become a focal point of religious and cultural revival in the region. She also highlighted that the Horana Vidyarathna Pirivena, affiliated with the temple, has rendered an immense service to the country’s monastic and educational history.

The occasion was graced by the presence of the Chief Incumbent Madurawala Sobhitha Nayaka Thero, Labugama Narada Nayaka Thero and members of the Maha Sangha, and attended by the Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayathissa, several Members of Parliament, and a large gathering of residents.
