Sri Lanka and Maldives Reaffirm Strong Bilateral Ties following the visit of the President of Republic of Maldives.

The Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya met with the H.E. Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives, on 04 May 2026 at Hilton Hotel, Colombo.

Welcoming the President of the Republic of Maldives Dr. Muizzu, the Prime Minister underscored the significance of his visit in further strengthening the longstanding bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

During the discussion, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of enhancing cooperation in the field of education, noting the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding during the visit. She highlighted opportunities to further expand collaboration in higher education and capacity building.

Both sides discussed the potential to deepen engagement in key sectors such as tourism and trade, with a view to promoting mutual economic growth and investment. The discussion further focused on the shared vulnerabilities of Sri Lanka and the Maldives to climate change emphasizing the importance of addressing these challenges collectively at the regional level.

Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to further strengthening and sustaining the strong bilateral relationship between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from both sides, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iruthisham Adam, Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade Mohamed Saeed, Minister of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources, Mr. Ahmed Shiyam, including Ministers and high-level representatives of the Government of Maldives. Representing Sri Lanka, the meeting was attended by the Secretary to the Prime Minister Mr. Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary, Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, Mr. Nalaka Kaluwewe, High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to the Maldives, H.E. Mohamed Rizvi Hassen, Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister, Ms. Sagarika Bogahawatta, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism.
