While addressing a public meeting held in the Manpai, Jaffna (15), Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that women’s representation in Parliament should be 50% and that arrangements should be made to send a woman to Parliament from Jaffna.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya further commented that, the year 2024 is a crucial year for the people of this country. On two occasions, the people came together to change the history of this country. In the first instance, a person born from the peasantry became the President of the country. A few months later, you changed the Parliament.
“Thus in the ruling party of this parliament, there are a group of people from all walks of life, elected from the general public, representing all sections of the society and from various professions”, She claimed.
“You kept faith on the National People’s Power Party and voted for it. We have a great responsibility to protect that faith and bring about the change the people expected in the country. This government is committed to achieve that end since we are responsible to the people of this country.
Women in the country should have security to move freely. There should be trust. We are working hard to bring that situation into reality”, the Premier explained.
The Prime Minister revealed that for the first time in history, the highest number of women is represented in this parliament. There are 22 women members and 20 out of them are from the National People’s Power Party. “Women’s representation in parliament should be 50%. Get ready to have a woman member of parliament represent the parliament from the Jaffna district”, she highlighted.
Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya further said that the government is working to improve the economy of the people and that the government is working to create entrepreneurs across the country in that regard.
