Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that it is the Government’s intention to provide justice to the people who are deprived of the same due to rewards and sponsorships. The Premier made this statement at the occasion of declaring the renovated Court of Appeal building to the public today (18).
The renovations of the building were carried out by the expense of People’s Republic of China in the form of a total donation.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister emphasized the symbolic importance of the Court of Appeal, calling it a testament to the country’s commitment to justice, fairness, and equality. She mentioned:
“This is more than just a building; it is a symbol of justice, fairness, and equality under the law. For decades, our country has endured the suffering of individuals denied justice due to inequities and a system influenced by rewards and sponsorships. Our priority is to address these issues, ensure fairness, and provide access to justice for all.”
Prime Minister Amarasuriya highlighted the importance of an independent and trustworthy judiciary, stating that legal powers granted under the Constitution must be exercised impartially. She emphasized the need to address the challenges faced by vulnerable communities, including women, children, and people with disabilities, in their pursuit of justice.
She further remarked:“Justice must be accessible to everyone without fear of intimidation or harassment. We are committed to ensuring that no one endures prolonged hardships while seeking their rightful justice. Respect and dignity must underpin every aspect of this process.”
The Prime Minister also extended her gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for their support in strengthening Sri Lanka’s judicial infrastructure.“This investment in our judiciary is a reflection of the strong bilateral ties between our nations and a commitment to upholding the rights of the people of Sri Lanka,” she stated.
A group of invitees including the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Sri Lanka, Qi Zhenhong, Chief Justice Murdu Fernando and many others participated in this event.
