The cabinet memorandum submitted by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on 06.03.2024 has been approved for providing relief to the people who have been affected by the Southwest monsoon situation.

Accordingly, to submit a status report within two weeks on the damage caused due to the bad weather condition, and to immediately implement a programme to repair the damaged public infrastructure systems with the full contribution of each responsible Ministry by deploying the armed forces and the civilian supervisory force. Cabinet has also approved the recommendations to implement an immediate program.

As a result of the weather changes that are developing unexpectedly with the activation of the Southwest monsoon this year, thousands of families have become temporarily destitute due to heavy rains in many districts of the island where it caused landslides, tree falls, floods and severe damage to public infrastructure systems. Therefore, the Prime Minister presented an immediate program to provide relief to the affected families and to restore the damaged public infrastructure with the full contribution of other relevant Ministries by taking the services of the armed forces and the civil security force. The proposal was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
