Commemorative stamp to mark IWMI’s 40 years of partnership with Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Philatelic Bureau of the Postal Department issued a Commemorative Stamp and First Day Cover to mark the International Water Management Institute’s 40 years of partnership with Sri Lanka.

The first Commemorative Stamp and First Day Cover was ceremonially presented to Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardana at the IWMI Headquarters at Pelawatte, Shrijayawardenepura today (May 29).

Addressing the function, Dr Simi Kamal, Chair, IWMI Board of Governors said that IWMI has broadened its focus on irrigation management to major issues of integrated water resource management at river basin and national levels and this evolution is reflected in its programmes in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka ranges from improvements to agricultural water management and productivity, water and climate information, watershed and river basin management, circular economy and food waste, and the conservation and sustainable use of Colombo wetlands. IWMI has implemented over 150 research projects since 1986, resulting in nearly 1,000 scientific publications on Sri Lanka — in partnership with over 10 national universities and many other Sri Lankan institutions.

Secretary to the Prime Minister Anura Dissanayake, Secretary to the Ministry of Irrigation, Saman Pandikorala, IWMI Director General, Dr P. Ramanujam, Special Advisor and Postmaster General S.R.W.M.R.P. Sathkumara were present on this occasion.
