The objective of the government is to make Sri Lanka a country with the lowest electricity prices in the region, ensuring fair and affordable electricity for all citizens. - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that the objective of the government is to make Sri Lanka a country with the lowest electricity prices in the region, thereby providing fair and affordable electricity to all citizens.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while attending the opening of the ’Sobadhanavi’ 350 MW Combined Cycle Power Plant in Kerawalapitiya, which contributes 12% of the requirement of the national power system.

The Prime Minister further stated:

The world is now moving into a transitional era led by sustainability and innovation, adapting to ever-changing consumer demands and regulatory frameworks in the energy sector.

Amidst such global trends, Sri Lanka ranks high among the countries in the region with the most expensive electricity rates.

One of the main obstacles in transitioning to a production-based economy, in order to recover from the severe economic crisis caused by decades of mismanagement, is the unfair cost of energy.

Our government is focusing on new energy sectors, particularly solar and wind power, in order to reduce high electricity costs.

To make Sri Lanka the country with the lowest electricity prices rates in the region, the Government is implementing procurement and tender processes and shifting from oil-based electricity generation towards renewable sources such as solar and wind.

It is also a goal of the Government to strengthen the national economy by encouraging contribution from producers and provide fair and affordable electricity to all citizens .

I am pleased to learn that this power generation system has been designed by the efforts of our local engineers and human resources.

I humbly request all citizens to use electricity more responsibly, reduce unnecessary consumption, and contribute to strengthening the national economy both institutionally and individually.

Addressing the gathering, Minister of Power and Energy Eng. Kumara Jayakody stated:

The construction of renewable power plants has at times been hindered by certain political motives. In line with our Government’s policy, we are proceeding with the necessary procurements in a proper and transparent manner. We must pay attention to the future of the power sector. As coal power plants can no longer be used, we must also think of the alternatives available to us.

Human resources of our country have received an international recognition. However, we have not been able to fully utilize these talents within our own country. Many Sri Lankans perform exceptionally well abroad, yet when they return to serve here, they face numerous challenges.

The real issue in this country is the failure to properly manage these resources. We are aware of this, and therefore we are taking steps to prioritize and empower local human resources. In order to enter the global platform, our human resources must be strengthened.

The Government initiates in restructuring the Ceylon Electricity Board. Opportunities must be created for new knowledge. We have seen many institutions where those at the top positions never provide opportunities for new knowledge and this must change.

We are not subjecting CEB employees to any political interference. What we ask is simply for them to work efficiently. There are many structural issues within the CEB. Through restructuring, we will create an environment where everyone can work with professional dignity. However, some may create problems for political gain. Even today, a small group made an unsuccessful attempt. While safeguarding rights, we remind everyone not to deceive workers with lies and misuse politics.

The event was attended by the Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe, Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal, Vice Chairman of CEB Prof. Saliya Jayasekara, and U.D. Jayawardena, founder of LTL Holdings, along with several others participants.

Our Government’s aim is to transform the Police Service into an independent, efficient, friendly, and people-oriented service. – Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated that it is the Government’s expectation to transform the Police Service into an independent, efficient, friendly, and people-oriented service.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of the 84th Police Inter-Divisional Athletics meets held on 14 September at the Field Force Headquarters, Colombo.

At the 84th Police Inter-Divisional Athletics Meets, the award for the Best Female Athlete was presented to Sachithra Jayakanthan of the Criminal Investigation Division, while the awards for the Best Male Athletes were presented to T.G.S. Wijethunga, A.M.N. Perera, and Hemantha. The Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy for Overall Runner-Up was presented by the Prime Minister to the Criminal Investigation Department and the President’s Challenge Trophy for Overall Championship to the Special Task Force.

Addressing further the Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya stated,

Sports are not only important for participation and victory but also for building a healthy, disciplined, and intelligent society.

Victory, prestige, and pride are achieved through sports, while participating in sports builds a healthy nation, fostering disciplined, strong personalities with higher mental attitudes.

For a service like the police, which works closely with the public, maintaining discipline, integrity, and a positive mindset is extremely important.

Therefore, the Police Inter-Divisional Athletics meet contributes not only to producing national-level athletes but also to enhancing your professional dignity and value.

Although Sri Lanka, a country of broken dreams, still possesses much potential in sports, I must emphasize that Sri Lanka’s position in the international sporting sector remains far behind.

In the past, our nation’s cricket reached a notable level, but in recent history, cricket has faced certain setbacks.

It is the goal of our Government to implement a sports and physical well-being policy capable of bringing honor and pride to the nation, as well as creating a healthy and disciplined citizenry.

I also wish to take this opportunity to share some thoughts regarding the Police Service.

In maintaining law and order and peace in the country, the police play a vital role as the institution closest to the people.

One of the most significant factors reflecting the rule of law in society is the independent and efficient functioning of the police.

However, the prevailing public perception of the Sri Lanka Police is that it is an institution where services cannot be obtained without political or social connections, or financial contributions. It is of utmost importance to change this perception through your discipline, adherence to the law, and fair discharge of duties.

Furthermore, certain police officers have suffered due to political interference or lack of proper recognition.

The present Government will in no way exert undue influence on your service or interfere in your duties. Therefore, you have a historic opportunity to build public trust by enforcing the law independently and fairly for all.

The Government’s goal is to transform the Police Service into an independent, efficient, friendly, and people-oriented service.

In order to achieve this goal, it is important to remember that the discipline, patience, unity, and mental focus you gain from sports are crucial in shaping your profession into one respected by society and trusted by the people. Therefore, I urge you to dedicate yourselves to building a disciplined and independent Police Service that has earned the confidence of the public.

The event was attended by the The Minister of Public Defense and parliamentary affairs Ananda Wijayapala, Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sunil Kumara Gamage, Deputy Minister of Public Defense and Parliamentary Affairs Sunil Watagala, Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Sugath Thilakaratne, Secretary to the Prime Minister Pradeep Saputhanthri, Secretary to the Ministry of Public Defense Ravi Seneviratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Aruna Bandara, Chairman of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption Attorney-at-Law Ranga Dissanayake, Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya, senior police officers, officers representing police stations across the island, athletes, and participants.

When we talk about the president’s funds, what we mostly hear is about how the President’s Fund was misused. A privileged group had used it to increase their own privileges and benefits.

Today, that situation has completely changed, and we are pleased that the President’s Fund is now being used 100% for its true purpose. The fund has now become closer to the people, enabling them to easily access its benefits in their own areas.

“I Condemn the Immoral Threat Made to a Member of Parliament and Call for a System to Control the Immoral Behavior of Members of Parliament” - Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya-

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, speaking in Parliament today (11th), stated that she condemns the immoral threat made by Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Prasad Siriwardena towards Member of Parliament Lakmali Hemachandra. She further requested the Hon. Speaker to devise a formal system to regulate and prevent immoral conduct by Members of Parliament.

The Prime Minister further stated that a Member of Parliament who also functions as the Opposition Leader’s media spokesperson had spoken in a threatening manner to MP Lakmali Hemachandra. She emphasized that such conduct cannot be considered merely a personal threat but must be viewed as offensive behavior and an act of violence, especially in a context where Sri Lanka records the lowest female parliamentary representation in South Asia.

The Prime Minister further observed that 22 female MPs, who represent all the women of the country, have been elected to Parliament through much effort, and that the intimidation they face reflects the broader challenges encountered by women across society. She stressed that threatening a female MP who speaks on behalf of women is in fact a threat to all women in Sri Lanka.

Dr. Amarasuriya noted that the people of the country have already expressed their disapproval of such conduct, including through public reactions on social media, and urged opposition MPs to take note of this sentiment and change their behavior.

She further stated that little girls across the nation look up to women parliamentarians as role models, and the behavior of MPs directly influences their aspirations.

The Prime Minister therefore reiterated her call for a system to be established to regulate and prevent unethical behavior within Parliament, ensuring that debates are conducted with dignity and respect.
