Today (2024.09.13) the Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena addressed a letter to the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industry, Mahinda Amaraweera and the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Safety, Nalin Fernando Minister instructing them to introduce a guaranteed price for mung beans as soon as possible.

The food security and economic regeneration committees in all the District and Divisional Secretariats as well as the regional development and agriculture committees have launched a programme to educate and encourage farmers to grow mung beans in the intermediate season between harvests. Under this encouragement, a very successful mung harvest is coming to the market and the far need a fair purchase price.

The presentation of the Buddha statue donated to Sri Lanka by Indonesia was held at the ’Dharmayathanaya’ in Bauddaloka Mawatha, Colombo today (Sept 12) under the patronage of Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

Ambassador of Indonesia Dewi Gustina Tobing presented the Buddha statue to the Prime Minister, who in turn handed over the statue to Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera, the Chief Incumbent of the Dharmayathanaya, where the Indonesian statue will be installed at the special section dedicated to Buddha statues from Asian countries.

A senior Buddhist delegation from the Maha Chulalongkorn Raja Vidyalaya University in Aythya, Thailand agreed to establish strong links with universities in Sri Lanka to further strengthen close cooperation in Buddhist studies. A high-level delegation headed by Most Venerable Prof Phramha Surasak Nayake Thera, who is the Vice Rector of MCU held a discussion with Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena at the Temple Trees in Colombo today (Sept 12).

Ven Phramha Surasak Thera said the MCU has Buddhist History of Sri Lanka as a major subject of studies and it will have academic and student exchange programs with universities in Sri Lanka.

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena thanks the Netherlands for the continuous assistance to preserve and sustain archaeological heritages of Sri Lanka in addition to support for infrastructure development and agriculture.

This was stated when the Ambassador of Netherlands Bonnie Horbach called on him at the Temple Trees in Colombo today (Sept 9). She said as a person coming from a country with immense experience in water management, she was amazed at the Sri Lanka’s ancient irrigational systems that include long canals and tanks. “Dutch are experts in water management, but Sri Lanka’s comprehensive system of water management pre-dates us by far,” she commented.

The versatile actor and Buddhist activist called on Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena with 65 Buddhist pilgrims from Maharatshtra, Madhya Pradesh and Telengana at the Temple Trees in Colombo on Wednesday (September 4).

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said new cooperative business models are essential for rural upliftment and the vast cooperative system should be galvanized for growth of rural industries and agriculture.

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said there is immense potential for India and Sri Lanka to further strengthen economic cooperation and it is for mutual benefit considering the aspect of complementarity in bilateral ties.
